More Funds, Less Variety

How many mutual funds1 are too many? You may think that the more funds you own, the more diversified2 your portfolio will be. But that’s not necessarily the case.

Funds in the same asset class — large-cap stock funds, for example — may hold many of the same companies in their portfolios. So even though you own several funds, you may not be well diversified if the funds hold similar stocks. The same might be true if you own multiple funds that invest in the same industry, such as pharmaceuticals or finance.

You can help cushion risk by buying funds that invest in a variety of asset classes and industries. Ask your financial professional to help you choose a mix of funds that fits your goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance.

1. You should consider the fund’s investment objectives, charges, expenses, and risks carefully before you invest. The fund’s prospectus, which can be obtained from your financial representative, contains this and other information about the fund. Read the prospectus carefully before you invest or send money. Shares, when redeemed, may be worth more or less than their original cost.
2. Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against loss in a declining market.
