If you’re a college student who will study abroad, there are a few things you should consider before starting out on this adventure.

  • Studying abroad will cost more than tuition. Check to see what’s included and if financial aid covers any extra expenses.

  • Get a passport. If you already have one, make sure it won’t expire for a year or two.

  • Find out how much you will have to pay for cellphone service.

  • Study up. Americans can experience culture shock, even in English-speaking countries.

  • Research public transportation costs. Most European countries have passes of various length that include both rail and bus.

  • Make sure you have a credit card and ATM card that don’t have international surcharges. Or have a pay app on your phone — but watch out for pickpockets. Notify your bank of the dates you will be gone.
