Look Around You
Get out the video camera — or at least your cell phone. Time to start snapping some pictures of the contents of your home. No, it’s not to show off that new flat screen or the artwork you bought at a street fair. It’s so you’ll know exactly what you have in your home if you ever have to submit an insurance claim.
Having an inventory of your possessions could be essential if an unexpected event, such as flood, fire, or theft, made it necessary to replace them. Start by coming up with a plan for organizing your inventory. For example, you might want to group items by room, item type, or purpose. You can find inventory checklists online that might make the task easier.
It’s a good idea to save sales receipts, warranty information, and model and serial numbers in a file, especially for big-ticket items. Apps are also available that allow you to photograph and identify items and store the inventory electronically.
