Make a Budget with Your Teen

A part-time job after school or on weekends may not pay a fortune, but it does mean your teen is earning money. So it may be time to ask your teen to pay some of his or her own expenses. Coming up with some general guidelines for determining the items or activities each of you will pay for can start the conversation.

Basics Versus Extras

You probably don’t expect your child to pay for necessities like food or winter clothing, but you might want a son or daughter to foot the bill — or part of it — for a new pair of skis or a smart phone. Talking about who pays for what can include setting limits on the amount you’re willing to spend on an item and offering your child the option of using his or her own money to upgrade.

On the Go

You might expect a working teen to pay for social activities, such as eating out or seeing a movie. But you may want to chip in for special occasions that may be difficult for teens to afford, such as a class trip.

New Drivers

It’s not unreasonable to expect a teen driver who borrows your car to put gas in the tank. And since teen drivers are expensive to insure, you might ask your child to chip in for auto insurance premiums.
